Why does MotorMouth exist?
MotorMouth was formed in July 2000 in response to demand by Australian motorists for information on the fluctuating prices of unleaded petrol. It was initially set up to cover the major routes within a 15-kilometre radius of the Brisbane CBD. Due to the overwhelming response from the motoring public, MotorMouth expanded its monitoring service throughout 2001 to include Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

With the launch of mypriceboard.com, MotorMouth’s own manual collection of fuel prices will be supplemented by prices submitted direct from service station owners and operators, providing a much broader coverage.

MotorMouth is committed to helping Australian motorists get a better deal on fuel by providing them with easily accessible information on fuel prices. Our aim is to alleviate the frustrations involved with fuel price variations by providing a twice daily 'snapshot' on fuel prices.

MotorMouth also provides an average price for each city, and each region within the city.

How often are the fuel prices updated?
Prices that are collected by MotorMouth drivers are updated twice each day from Monday-Saturday and once a day on Sundays. From Monday-Saturday fuel prices are progressively updated between 5:30am and 8:30am each morning and between noon and 3pm each afternoon. On Sundays fuel prices are updated between 10am and noon. It is not feasible for MotorMouth to monitor fuel prices on a 24-hour basis due to the variability of prices in the marketplace.

MotorMouth makes all of these prices available at no charge to consumers via the MotorMouth website as well as our partner's websites. These prices are also made available to Government and some petrol retailers on a commercial basis.

For prices that are submitted by service stations directly through MyPriceboard, prices are updated as soon as they are entered.

Why do fuel prices fluctuate so much?
Factors including oil prices, supply & demand, and price competition have an impact on what you pay at the bowser. Unlike certain other industries, these factors can change on an hourly basis. This constant state of flux leads to the variation in fuel prices. At MotorMouth we monitor and report on what is happening in the market and not why things happen.

[top]

How accurate is the data collected?
Prices collected by MotorMouth drivers is accurate at the time of collection. Prices submitted by service station operators through MyPriceboard are checked for irregularities; however we rely on service station operators to take full responsibility in entering prices to ensure their accuracy.
