Why does MotorMouth exist?
MotorMouth was formed in July 2000 in response to demand by Australian motorists for information on the fluctuating prices of unleaded petrol. It was initially set up to cover the major routes within a 15-kilometre radius of the Brisbane CBD. Due to the overwhelming response from the motoring public, MotorMouth expanded its monitoring service throughout 2001 to include Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

MotorMouth is committed to helping Australian motorists get a better deal on fuel by providing them with easily accessible information on fuel prices. Our aim is to alleviate the frustrations involved with fuel price variations by providing a twice daily 'snapshot' on fuel prices.

What services does MotorMouth provide?

Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth
and then provides motorists with the details of the cheapest fuel prices in their local area. MotorMouth also provides an average price for each city, and each region within the city.

Does MotorMouth monitor the quality of fuel, including ethanol levels?
At this stage, MotorMouth monitors the price of fuel rather than fuel quality. For more information on the current fuel quality standards in place and ethanol,

Why is MotorMouth charging fees for SMS fuel price services?
The majority of MotorMouth services, including searching and daily fuel price email alerts are free.
Due to the cost of providing our SMS services, a small fee is charged SMS users.

Is MotorMouth affiliated with any Service Stations or Oil Companies?
MotorMouth is totally independent from all oil companies and petrol stations. Our core objective is to provide you with information so you can make an informed decision with regards to petrol purchasing. For further information, please refer to our

How often are the fuel prices updated?
Prices on the MotorMouth website are updated twice each day from Monday-Saturday and once a day on Sundays. From Monday-Saturday fuel prices are progressively updated between 5:30am and 8:30am
each morning and between noon and 3pm each afternoon. On Sundays fuel prices are updated between 10am and noon . It is not feasible for MotorMouth to monitor fuel prices on a 24-hour basis due to the variability of prices in the marketplace.

[top]

Why do fuel prices fluctuate so much?
Factors including oil prices, supply & demand, and price competition have an impact on what you pay at the bowser. Unlike certain other industries, these factors can change on an hourly basis. This constant state of flux leads to the variation in fuel prices. At MotorMouth we monitor and report on what is happening in the market and not why things happen. We are here to provide motorists with information that can be used to find the best deal in the market

[top]

How accurate is the data collected?
The data is accurate at the time of collection. In
Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide there can be numerous price movements in a 24-hour period. In Perth, service stations must maintain their price for a fixed 24 hour period from 6am each day. MotorMouth delivers twice-daily updates each weekday to provide a more up-to-date reflection of the fuel pricing market.

My area is not listed in your survey - are you able to include it?
We plan to extend our monitoring to other cities and major towns; however this will take time to achieve.

[top]

Not all service stations in my area are surveyed - why?
In order to cater for as many motorists as possible, we have chosen to initially survey service stations that are on major routes. At present we cover about 50% of metropolitan service stations. Over time more service stations will be added. In
Perth, all metropolitan service stations are reported.

Why don't you cover country or regional areas?
At this stage we are not collecting fuel prices in country areas, however our ultimate aim is to cover as much of Australia as possible.
