MotorMouth Happenings

Hello again from the team at MotorMouth

There was a lot of chatter in the media leading up to Easter about rip offs and the apparent shift in the weekly price cycle to coincide with the Easter long weekend. It was very satisfying though to see that the thrust of the stories being told stuck to the facts – the weekly price cycle was expected to function normally with prices going up significantly on Thursday or Friday so motorists would be well advised to fill up on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Which is common knowledge for the vast majority of our readers and subsequently our advice should come as no surprise to you.

We have seen a shift in the low point of the price cycle for unleaded in most areas to Thursday – we think this is being caused by retailers trying to attract customers and resisting as long as possible before raising their prices. Whether this is sustainable or likely to continue is anyone’s guess, but I have a theory that so long the population believes that such and such a day is the cheapest of the week, the actual cheapest day of the week will be the following day.

Think about it. If I believe that Wednesday is the cheapest day, then perhaps some retailers will try and catch a few of the very price sensitive customers like me on Thursday morning in case I forgot to fill up on Wednesday. After catching a few extra sales, the market reaches the low point and someone puts their price up because the people who normally buy on Thursday aren’t so price sensitive and will not care so much about paying a higher price.

I’m still working on my theory but I thought I’d share it with you to see what you think. Drop me a line and let me know.

Until next month, take care and safe motoring.

Cheers
Sean Rennick
