MotorMouth Happenings

Hello again from the team at MotorMouth.

This month we have some special news about a FANTASTIC competition from the team at Shell.

It’s really simple. If you like the idea of driving around Italy in a luxury car, staying in 4 star accommodations all the way and having $2,000 spending money in your pocket, go to http://www.shell.com.au/vpowerclub/ and sign up. Once you’ve made a purchase of VPower and registered your purchase, you are in the draw to win.

Imagine! The sun on your back, the wind in your hair – ah…it seems too good to be true. Seeing as I can’t enter I’m already incredibly jealous!

Of course, full terms and condition are available on the website and the competition closes on 19 August so you will have to hurry.

Enough of the day dreaming!

This last month the price of oil and refined petrol has jumped out of bed with a shock. Back in early July the price of a barrel of refined petrol was around the $85.00 AUD mark, and now it’s about $100.00 AUD. Were it not for the mighty Australian dollar the price at the pump would have been much higher so that’s small comfort.

Word from up in Queensland after the demise of the 8c per litre fuel subsidy has it that there was very little evidence of irregular prices in the market, with only a handful of retailers getting a please explain. All in all we couldn’t see anything too out of the ordinary, however as someone mentioned to me lately there is no law compelling fuel to be sold at a reasonable price.

No law of any kind.

However in reality if someone is charging too much they lose too many customers and it’s not long before they drop their price to try and win customers back. And most of the time those forces work just fine.

Which brings us to my last point. If you want to get the best deal when buying fuel and maximise the effect your choice has in keeping prices low – start looking to fill up before the car gets to empty.

Driving around on fumes give you less opportunity to exercise choice and makes you more susceptible to not getting the best price.

That’s in for this month, take care and safe motoring.
