MotorMouth Happenings

Hello and welcome to the July 2006 issue of the MotorMouth Newsletter

Recently we have noticed increased interest by both the media and consumers of the impact on the environment caused by vehicle greenhouse gases and air pollution emissions. So, if you are in the market for a new vehicle or just curious about the fuel consumption of your current vehicle, we have found a website that can help you to make greener, environmentally friendly choices.

The Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide website has recently been upgraded and provides an easy-to-use search function to compare the environmental ratings of carbon dioxide emissions and air pollutants.

The front page allows a quick comparison of up to three vehicle makes (includes all new light vehicles sold in Australia up to 3.5 tonnes) as well as performance ratings and current top selling vehicles. The vehicles are all rated against the international “Euro” standards and are based on testing using standardised, carefully controlled conditions in specialised vehicle emission laboratories.

In addition to emission ratings, the site also provides information on fuel consumption and with everyone firmly focussed on the price at the pump this has to be a key consideration in any vehicle purchase.

The long term cost of what may appear to be a small efficiency advantage of 2L/100km will save a 1500 litres of fuel over the period of 5 years with an average travel of 15,000 km per annum. Apart from saving the owner several thousand dollars (at today’s fuel price!) it will also help to save the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 3.75 tonnes.

The Green Vehicle Guide is updated regularly as new models come onto the market.

I hope you find the information interesting and helpful in allowing you to do your bit for the environment.

Until next month…

MotorMouth Competition

This Months Prize

This month's winner is Eleanor from Bald Hills in QLD.

Eleanor's entry - More than one way to save on a driving holiday

"When we plan to go away for a driving holiday, we arrange to leave mid-week when the petrol is cheapest AS WELL as when the roads are quietest.

This saves us money at the bowser when we head off and beats the congestion as everyone tries to get out of town away for the weekend."

Congratulations Eleanor! Your prize will be sent out to you shortly.

Alfa 159: One really sexy Italian
Sexy, smooth and assertive. This well-dressed Italian won me over before I even opened the door. And yes, I am talking about a car; the Alfa Romeo 159, to be precise. The 156 replacement is the type of car that just screams, "I'm here and I mean business".

BMW's baby a real buzz, even when burning diesel
It is a sign of the times. There has been nothing but diesel-powered passenger cars in our road test garage for the past month. One-by-one they have been trotted out with ridiculous regularity. Not that we're complaining, mind you.
