Hello and welcome to the June 2006 edition of the MotorMouth Newsletter.
Recently I was shopping around for some Comprehensive Insurance for my own vehicle and came across an excellent report that had been prepared by Cannex - an independent and comprehensive specialist research service.
Here are some of their tips plus a few of my own:
Shop around - Quotes can vary dramatically between providers. Check out both on line and off line providers
Make sure you are honest with the insurance company on your driving/accident record
Save money by choosing what optional extras you actually need, eg do you require windscreen or all glass coverage or a hire car in the event of an accident
Make sure you detail all of the accessories fitted to your vehicle- it saves a big hassle if your vehicle is stolen
Consider the size of the “Excess” that will apply - a higher Excess will lower your premium
Investigate the benefit of paying annually instead of monthly – the savings can add up!
Look at bundling all of your insurance policies with one provider - many offer a discount for this
Work out what level of cover you really need. Predominantly there are 3 main types:
Comprehensive
Third Party + Fire & Theft
Third Party Only
Sometimes, especially in the case of older vehicles, it can be more effective to take out Third Party Insurance Only.
It is important to take this out on top of Comprehensive Third Party Insurance that is required when registering your vehicle
Check to see if the policy you choose covers variables such as weather damage
Keep your insurance claim slate as clean as possible to ensure the lowest premium
Only make a claim when the damage done greatly exceeds your policy excess - This can also help you keep your Rating 1
Ensure your insurer provides a well-rounded offering when it comes to claims being made (Quick Processing, Hire Car, Choice of Repairer)
This month's winner is Craig from Carrum Downs in VIC.
Craig's entry - Electric Bike
"Do you want to save money on fuel, like the idea of a pushbike but dont want to arrive at your destination tired and sweaty? Then maybe an electric push bike is for you. I have been riding one now for 8 months and have saved a lot of money on petrol.
It does 30kph top speed and has a range of 30 kms between charges, perfect for short trips in good weather. It has paid for itself. As long as its 200 watts or less in power output its totally legal in all states and you dont need registration or a licence, so more money is saved. In addition its great for the enviroment.
"
Congratulations Craig! Your prize will be sent out
to you shortly.

Jetta goes 1200km on a tank All Jetta engines use direct fuel injection for low emissions and low fuel consumption - including the diesel TDI. The Jetta range has a Euro4 emissions endorsement, something still a way off in Australian Design Rules. Why would you opt for the diesel? Because it will go about 1200km on a tank of fuel and probably last a lot longer than a petrol engine.
