MotorMouth Happenings

Hello and welcome to the October edition of our MotorMouth newsletter.

MotorMouth has been monitoring fuel prices in metropolitan Australia since 1989 and in the months of August, September and October this year, Australian motorists have experienced the highest average fuel prices since our records began.

Although all fuel prices are high at the moment, we have received a lot of feedback about the high price of diesel compared to unleaded petrol. As a result we have compared the ULP and DSL averages in each city in the month of September in 2003 and 2004. As you can see, the price difference between ULP and DSL averages in September 2003 was relatively small, with the major difference of about 3 cents in Sydney and Perth. In contrast to that, in September 2004 the difference between ULP and DSL average prices ranged from 6 cents in Brisbane to over 8 cents in Melbourne.

City ULP Sept 2003 DSL Sept 2003 ULP Sept 2004 DSL Sept 2004
Brisbane 81.9 82.3 94.7 100.7
Sydney 89.6 92.7 103.5 110.0
Melbourne 89.7 89.3 99.2 107.7
Adelaide 91.2 92.9 102.0 109.6
Perth 91.1 94.4 102.0 109.5

Cashing in with a budget beater
The first surprise was the roomy cabin, the second was the performance from the V6 engine, and the third was the price. For a four-wheel-drive that could easily be mistaken at a distance for one of the more expensive European SUVs, Kia's Sorento has slipped in under the radar.

Fuel Saving Tips

This month's winner is Bruce from Bentleigh in VIC

"Leave home 15 minutes earlier than required. This has many advantages besides the direct effect of saving fuel due to less traffic. It also provides an extra 20 minutes pre-work to relax and prepare for the day ahead."

Congratulations Bruce, your $25 free fuel voucher is on the way!
