MotorMouth Happenings

Hello and welcome to the September issue of the MotorMouth Newsletter.

As the end of the year draws closer, we thought it timely to update and remind all MotorMouth users about the phase out of lead replacement petrol (LRP). Although there is no specific date set that will define the phase out of LRP, the Australian Institute of Petroleum cautions motorists that supply will most likely become limited from the end of 2004.

Why is LRP being phased out?
LRP is to be phased out because the number of vehicles that require lead replacement petrol in Australia has reduced significantly and it will soon no longer be viable for it to be produced and sold.

What does the phase out mean for motorists?
All motorists that drive vehicles requiring LRP will need to assess what petrol they will use when LRP is phased out.

LRP has two primary characteristics:
1. An octane rating of 96 RON
2. An anti-valve seat recession additive (AVSR).

Depending on the type of vehicle driven, motorists will need to use ULP, PULP or PULP plus an AVSR protection additive.

How to know which fuel to use in your vehicle?
The best way to determine what is best for your car is to contact your vehicle manufacturer. Also a list of cars that can run on ULP without AVSR protection is available from the Department of Environment and Heritage and on the Australian Institute of Petroleum Website.

Need to know more about AVSR protection additive?
Motorists will be able to purchase AVSR protection additive from motoring shops and most service stations that no longer offer LRP. It is important that the correct amount of AVSR protection additive is used. Incorrect usage of AVSR protection additive could harm engines.

If you drive a vehicle that will require using AVSR protection additive, it is recommended that you:
1. Have a supply of AVSR additive ready when fuelling your car, as it is injected or poured into the fuel tank
2. Fill you car with PULP or similar
3. Use the AVSR additive only as instructed
4. Dispose of the AVSR additive container appropriately.

If you would like to read more about the phase out of LRP and what that means for you, go to the following link on the Australian Institute of Petroleum website: http://www.aip.com.au/pdf/LRP%20brochure.pdf.

In other news, we’ve been made aware of a new fuel offer from discount store Dimmey’s. The deal on offer is that if you spend $50 or more at Dimmey’s, you will receive a discount of 12 cents on LPG and petrol at participating independent service stations. At the moment the discount offer is on trial in Victoria’s west, but if it proves successful, the offer may be extended nationally. We will report more information on this offer as it comes to hand.

Until next month, keep an eye on fuel prices and spread the word about our free money saving services...

Kind Regards,

Bernadette Murray
