MotorMouth Happenings

Hello and welcome to the August edition of the MotorMouth newsletter.

In this month’s editorial we will be covering some basic safety measures when filling a car with fuel. Although electricity related accidents at service stations are not common, some instances have occurred and the following safety precautions have been identified to minimize potential refuelling hazards.

Guidelines for Safe Refuelling

1. TURN OFF YOUR VEHICLE ENGINE.

2. DO NOT SMOKE, LIGHT MATCHES OR LIGHTERS WHILE refuelling AT THE PUMP OR WHEN USING PETROL ANYWHERE ELSE.

3. DO NOT USE YOUR MOBILE PHONE (OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE) - TURN IT OFF AND LEAVE IT INSIDE THE VEHICLE.
Battery powered equipment such as mobile phones, pagers, and cameras represent a potential ignition source. Mobile phones can ignite fuel or fumes. Mobile phones that light up when switched on or when they ring, or if dropped, can theoretically release enough energy to provide a spark for ignition.

4. DO NOT RE-ENTER YOUR VEHICLE DURING refuelling.
Avoid potential static electricity problems at the petrol pump by staying outside your vehicle while refuelling. Motorists should not get back into their vehicles during refuelling. It may be tempting to get back in the car when it is cold or for any number of reasons. Staying outside the vehicle will greatly minimize the likelihood of any build-up of static electricity that could be discharged at the nozzle. Motorists who cannot avoid getting back into the vehicle should always first touch a metal part of the vehicle with a bare hand, such as the door, or some other metal surface, away from the fill point upon exiting the vehicle.

5. IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT A STATIC-CAUSED FIRE OCCURS WHEN refuelling, LEAVE THE NOZZLE IN THE FILL PIPE AND BACK AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. NOTIFY THE STATION ATTENDANT IMMEDIATELY.

6. WHEN DISPENSING PETROL INTO A CONTAINER, USE ONLY AN APPROVED PORTABLE CONTAINER AND PLACE IT ON THE GROUND WHEN refuelling TO AVOID A POSSIBLE STATIC ELECTRICITY IGNITION OF FUEL VAPOURS. CONTAINERS SHOULD NEVER BE FILLED WHILE INSIDE A VEHICLE OR ITS BOOT, THE BED OF A UTILITY TRUCK OR THE FLOOR OF A TRAILER.

Fuel Saving Tips

This month's winner is Sergei from Northfield in SA.

"There are fuel savings to be achieved with modern motor oils. Read your Vehicle Owners Manual carefully and you will find a section headed Lubricants which explains which grade of motor oil is suitable for your vehicle. Listed there will be certain ratings of motor oils which are suitable for your vehicle. Look for a rating described as ILSAC, which stands for International Standardization and Approval Committee.

This committee sets standards for motor oils for fuel economy properties by applying a rating. Current ratings are listed as GF2 or GF3. I have been using a motor oil for the past 4 years which has an approved ILSAC rating of GF2, and have achieved fuel economy savings of 7%. I am currently obtaining 13.4 litres per 100Km city cycle in metropolitan Adelaide."

Congratulations Sergei, your $25 free fuel voucher is on the way!
